La histórica King’s Cross Station forma parte de esta última categoría. Con un tráfico de más de treinta millones de transeúntes al año, era necesario adecuarla al siglo XXI. El equipo de John McAslan & Partners ha ido, sin embargo, un paso más allá convirtiéndola en un nuevo, y contemporáneo, símbolo de la ciudad.
La transformación de Kings Cross ha consistido en tres intervenciones diferentes: recuperación, restauración y nueva construcción. El hangar y los edificios del ala oeste han sido remodelados y revitalizados; el ala este y la fachada sur han sido restaurados según el diseño original; por último, y como ya hemos mencionado, han construido un nuevo hall.
El hall consiste en una bóveda semicircular de 20 metros de altura y 150 metros de largo. La bóveda parte de cinco columnas de acero en el centro del vestíbulo que se ramifican en forma de árbol creando una cubierta. El acero contrasta con el ladrillo y la mampostería de la edificación original. Por la noche, la estructura se ilumina con diferentes colores creando un espectáculo poco habitual en una estación ferroviaria.
El nuevo vestíbulo proporciona una nueva entrada a la estación a través de una pasarela en el entresuelo que va de norte a sur. También conecta con la planta baja del Hotel Great Northern.
